Public Stained Glass Restoration:

Oneida County Courthouse

This historic courthouse located in Rhinelander WI was built in 1908-1910 and is famous for its huge glass dome. Through a cooperative effort, Oakbrook Esser Studios and Laib Restoration have completed the extensive restoration project. The courthouse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, received grants through the federal government to help assist with financing for the project.

In total, 2,400 pieces of glass needed to be restored when the project first started in May 2004. The monumental restoration involved replacing cracked panes and the failing aluminum framework holding all of the panes in place. The crew began the project by removing two of the eight large sections at a time, four sections per season. A working platform was created inside the dome for access from the interior.
Each panel was meticulously removed and lowered down with a low-tech pulley system while the large openings were covered with plywood sheathing for the duration of the restoration. The fragile panes were taken to our company’s Oconomowoc home base where each piece was dismantled, refurbished, and glazed in new copper came construction. The restored panes were brought back to the courthouse and installed into a new bronze and copper frame system joined by stainless steel, adding integrity to the structure. Completed in August of 2005, the newly improved dome is the crowning jewel of a very important historic national treasure. Oakbrook Esser is proud to have been a part in returning the dome to its former glory.

These projects are just a sample of our vast experience in preservation, conservation and restoration of stained and leaded glass. At Oakbrook Esser Studios we take special pride in knowing that the artistry we are providing will be enjoyed and revered for generations to come.
